The Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) is a non-profit organization that brings together biotechnology associations from across Asia to promote the development and growth of the biotechnology industry in the region. Established in 2004, FABA serves as a platform for its member organizations to exchange ideas, share best practices, and collaborate on initiatives that drive innovation and progress in biotechnology.
With a vision to create a thriving biotechnology ecosystem in Asia, FABA works closely with government bodies, academia, and industry to provide support and resources to its members. This includes organizing conferences, workshops, and networking events, as well as advocating for policies and regulations that foster innovation and growth in the biotechnology sector.
FABA is comprised of biotechnology associations from countries across Asia, including Japan, India, Nigeria, Bangladesh, the UAE, and many others. Advancing Biosecurity and Ethical Research
The Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) supported Health Security Partners in a significant stride in fortifying global biosecurity through a meticulously organized workshop in Hyderabad, India. "Biosecurity Workshop for Researchers Working with Plant Toxins and their Source Material," convened on February 7-8, marked a pivotal moment in collaborative efforts to safeguard public health and security.
By bringing together dedicated researchers specializing in the multifaceted applications of plant toxins—from pioneering drug discovery ventures to the development of sustainable biofuels—FABA facilitated an unprecedented exchange of knowledge and best practices. Esteemed experts from around the globe led robust discussions on the latent biosecurity threats these materials pose, emphasizing strategies to prevent their potential misuse. This workshop not only underscored the imperative of secure handling and storage of biohazardous materials but also supported a community of researchers committed to responsible science.
Empowering Innovation Through CRISPR Mastery
In support cutting-edge genetic engineering knowledge, FABA, in partnership with Xpertbio and Dr. Narasimha Telugu, orchestrated a comprehensive CRISPR workshop on February 10-11. This hands-on training session attracted a diverse cohort of participants, including ambitious researchers, eager students, and industry professionals, all united by a shared interest in mastering CRISPR-Cas9 technology.
The workshop's curriculum was meticulously designed to transition from theoretical underpinnings to practical applications, ensuring participants gained a holistic understanding of CRISPR's revolutionary potential. Through interactive sessions, attendees were guided through the intricacies of experimental design, gRNA construction, and CRISPR delivery methods, culminating in hands-on experience with genome editing.
This workshop not only equipped participants with the skills to navigate the complexities of gene editing but also inspired a new generation of innovators poised to push the boundaries of biological research.
A Landmark Talk on Precision Medicine in Oncology with Dr. Keith Flaherty
We are delighted to announce the successful collaboration with ASPIRE, and the University of Hyderabad in hosting an enlightening seminar on precision medicine in oncology, led by the esteemed Dr. Keith Flaherty.
Dr. Flaherty, the Director of Clinical Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, delivered an insightful talk titled "Broadening the Definition of Precision Medicine in Oncology" on the 15th of February at the School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad.
In his comprehensive address, Dr. Flaherty shared groundbreaking developments and his authoritative perspectives on the treatment of melanoma, highlighting the efficacy of BRAF, MEK, and combined BRAF/MEK inhibition in metastatic melanoma.
As a leader in the identification of mechanisms of de novo and acquired resistance to BRAF inhibitor therapy, Dr. Flaherty's insights have far-reaching implications for resistance to targeted therapy regimens in various malignant diseases.

BioAsia 2024: Catalyzing Global Collaboration
FABA's role as a supporting partner in BioAsia 2024 underscored its commitment to fostering global dialogue and collaboration in the life sciences sector. Held in Hyderabad, India, from February 26-28, this premier forum, themed "Transforming Life Sciences with Data and AI," convened thought leaders, innovators, and policymakers from over 50 countries.
The event kicked off with a high-profile inauguration by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, underlining the state government's commitment to fostering innovation in the life sciences sector.
The following days were packed with insightful discussions, thanks to the participation of prominent figures like Dr. Christopher Boerner (CEO of Bristol Myers Squibb), Prof. Gregg Semenza (Nobel Laureate and Johns Hopkins professor), and Dr. Rodney Hochman (President & CEO of Providence), who delivered captivating keynote addresses.
Panel discussions facilitated in-depth exploration of these themes, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange amongst attendees. The event culminated in a ceremony recognizing the achievements of five promising startups.
Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan emphasized the urgency of ensuring that healthcare innovations reach underserved communities, particularly in rural areas. Meanwhile, Telangana Industries & IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu celebrated the event's success, highlighting the increased participation and facilitated B2B meetings that fostered collaboration and potential partnerships.

BioAsia 2024 served as a pivotal platform for fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation in the life sciences and healthcare sector. It showcased the immense potential of data and AI in transforming this landscape, while also celebrating the achievements of startups and recognizing the need for equitable access to healthcare solutions. As the event concluded, it left a sense of optimism and a shared commitment to building a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
Reflecting on Two Decades of Innovation: Shri. B.P. Acharya's Visionary Address at BioAsia 2024
In a momentous gathering at BioAsia 2024, Shri. B.P. Acharya, a distinguished founding member, patron and chief mentor of the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA), shared his invaluable insights and reflections on the remarkable journey of biotechnology innovation in Hyderabad's Genome Valley. His address not only underscored the pivotal role of FABA in fostering a thriving biotech ecosystem but also highlighted the evolution of BioAsia as a premier global platform for collaboration and advancement in the biotech industry.
Shri. Acharya reminisced about the inception of BioAsia in February 2004 and its foundational aim to position Hyderabad as the biotech hub of India. He lauded the unique tripartite partnership between academia, industry, and government that catalyzed Genome Valley's emergence as a beacon of biotechnological innovation.
Reflecting on the evolution of Genome Valley as a meticulously planned ecosystem, Shri. Acharya shared his vision for expanding into new biotech sectors, such as agri-biotech and animal biotechnology. He underscored the potential for R&D growth, supported by government funds, to further propel the industry forward.
In his concluding thoughts, Shri. Acharya extended his gratitude towards FABA for its instrumental role in the genesis and growth of BioAsia. As we look towards the future, his visionary leadership and commitment to biotechnology continue to inspire us all.
